In the summer of 2009, Northwest Arkansas Audubon Society published BIRDS in Northwestern Arkansas, an ecological perspective by NWAAS field trip organizer and board member Joseph C. Neal.
BIRDS covers all species occurring in the western Ozarks of Arkansas. It provides dates and places where birds have been seen, many of the active field observers and researchers involved with these sightings, special records of large flocks and peak migration periods, and many comments on aspects of the ecology of the region that help shape bird distribution and abundance. An introductory essay presents the ecological and human landscape. The book also includes an extensive literature cited section, plus an index of bird names. All birds are included, including some that are extinct.
Printed copies are available for $12.95 from Nightbird Books in Fayetteville, Shiloh Museum in Springdale, and a few other locations. A printable PDF file of the book is also available on the NWAAS website. On the homepage, look at the bottom of the left hand side “NWAAS Bird info.”
